Criteria for Interns and New Associates

Attitude and Character
Ideal employees build trust with their employer and clients by doing what they say they are going to do. They develop a "big picture" view of their company and their company's clients -- and look for ways to add value. They constantly hone their skill sets: by independent study and by seeking-out and embracing advice. They welcome opportunities to get out of their comfort zone and take on challenges that stretch their limitations. They develop and nurture a network of long-term relationships by bringing empathy and value to the relationships.

Specific Skills and Education
We look for individuals with an undergraduate education that includes a range of basics -- language, writing, math, accounting, history, science, psychology -- rather than over-specialization in current trends. We particularly look for courses that develop conceptual, analytical, and communications skills.

CFI is an advocate for entrepreneurs
CFI helps early-stage companies and entrepreneurs launch enterprises and grow to a level where they can attract institutional capital. The Risk Taking Gene, published by CFI, discusses entrepreneurship's importance in our nation's history and its relevance today.

The business is challenging, messy, full of uncertainty, and never routine: we take on 50 new portfolio companies each year. Rather than being pigeon-holed in silos, interns and new associates participate, each step of the way, from concept to launch. They sit at the table when crucial formative decisions are being made and rub shoulders with CFI's cadre of experienced executives in residence seeking to "hook-up" with early-stage opportunities. As a result, CFI attracts top students from leading universities. Many "graduate" to senior level positions in portfolio companies or find career situations in more established concerns. CFI alumni can now be found worldwide in responsible positions within most industries.

  Search for Excellence

We look for attitude and adaptability rather than a specific laundry list of skills.

We do not expect new employees to know everything. We do expect them to have sufficient analytical skills and a well-enough rounded education to learn anything.

We also expect them to be able to clearly communicate their ideas, verbally and in writing.
